I wanted to ask rick a rather basic question. I’m traveling this holiday season with only carry-on and wanted to know if my husband can take a safety razor in his carry-on or if we have to buy one at our destination.

I sleep with a c-pap machine. It comes with its own case. Can I carry this on the plane or do I need to pack it. If luggage is lost I will have difficulty sleeping while on my vacation. It would be expensive to replace. As to medication, I take seven different medications. Can I put these in a carry-on bag. Again I cannot be without these. Thank you.

I receive emails from various travel sources, including yours.
Why does it seem impossible to find the lowest, advertised fare, even when you comply with all of their blackout rules?
Using FareCompare, how can I locate the ’special’ fares?
Should I be getting online in the middle of the night, to locate the best pricing?
Thanks.
Comment by Stan — November 27, 2007 @ 3:38 pm
Does FareCompare or anyone else provide email alerts that are restricted to nonstop flights? It’s not helpful to be alerted to price reductions for one or two stop flights when you wouldn’t travel except on a nonstop basis.

I am traveling to Germany in late December and flying back home in early January. What are the “Do’s and Don’t’s” as to what is permissable to carry-on and check through?
This is my first time flying internationally, is there anything else I should know?
Thanks.

Hi Rick,
I’m a dutch native, living in the US and trying to go back to Amsterdam for a vacation next spring. I want to travel with my 2 children but am disappointed with the rates. Appearantly the rates flying from the US to Europe differ greatly as oppose to going the opposite direction. I thought traveling with a baby and a toddler would be 30 to 50 percent cheaper than the regular adult rate. Can you explain to me why this is?
Thanks!

I am asking about navigational devices that will work not only in USA but also in Europe. I see that “maps” on units bought in USA have USA/Canada maps but is there a adaption or card insert that I can buy to allow useage in Europe?
And if you have any ideas on noise cancelling headphones- do they work and do they make the poor audio systems on planes any better?
Many thanks as always

I am planning a trip with my daugher to Paris the first week in March. Should I book now while fares are pretty good, or wait until after the first of the year - do they typically go up or down from here? I’m not a last minute person.

I wish to fly from PHL to HKG which only takes 1 extra day going west; hop a cruise with disembarkation in Athens, Greece, and returning westwardly for flight home to PHL. In the past a flight plan like this was booked as a roundtrip since it was a continuous circle. What, if any airlines still adhere to this booking method even though it has multiple cities? I have no idea what you want under my name–mail and website but the website I entered I seemed to have a problem. They also wanted me to go eastward which would take 2 days travel instead of one as mentioned above.

A travel agent advised us not to buy our RT ticket for travel to Europe in the summer of 2008 until Jan. She said the fares in December are “peak” fares, and will probably go down in January. We are worried, though, because of the price of oil. What do you think?
Comment by Candice Dahlstet — December 5, 2007 @ 7:46 pm
There was a comment on your web site concerning changing from one frequent flyer program to another ostensibly transferring your miles but also your elite status. In your comment you noted that some airline programs permit such switching. Will you list the airlines that do so?
I have been with Delta for many years and now I perceive that the price of a Delta upgradeable coach ticket has become very expensive.
Thank you.

I’m flying to India in January from Chicago. I’m traveling 3 hrs via bus to Chicago, then on the subway to O’Hare. Needless to say, I’ll need my coat until I get to the airport, but won’t need it in India. It’d also be nice to have it for the subway/bus ride home.
I’ve come up with a few ideas - wear an old coat and trash it before getting on the plane - but that doesn’t help me getting home.
I can’t pack the coat because I’m not checking luggage and just have enough room for my tiny int’l carry on.
Hubby suggested turning coats into lost & found at the airport as “lost” and then “find” them when we get back (also, old or goodwill coats.)
Hubby also suggested taking them to the post office in Terminal Two and mailing them to general mail post office Terminal two - that mail is held for 30 days.
I thought of checking with the Hilton Hotel there about their storage facility, if they have one?
I’m under the impression there are no longer lockers at the airport.
Suggestions?
Thanks! Lara

What (if anything) is reasonable to expect for a delay of 2 hours? I left on Thanksgiving from DTW for Singapore. I contacted NWA prior to leaving for the airport and was told the long haul (14 hours) from DTW was scheduled to leave on time. . . which of course it did not as there was a maintenance problem. So instead of 14 hours, we sat on the plane for an additional 2 hours prior to take off. I bearly made my connection from Tokyo to Singapore. I know NWA will not give me anything, until I ask, but what is reasonable, and I am well aware that the likely answer will be. . .so sorry, here’s nothing. I don’t know if this matters or not, but I was in business class at a fare of around $6,000!!!

Hi Rick,
I am flying from Portland to Burbank. It doesn’t matter when I go, as long as it is after Feb. 18th. I plan to stay 2 weeks.
How do I find the cheapest fare deal when I don’t have a “set-in-stone” departure date and want to browse further than 1-3 days on either side of my depart/return date?
We recently ran into this same problem with a quick 2 day trip to las vegas. Being retired, it doesn’t matter when we go, we just want the best deal. I spent 6 hours searching web sites for fares on different dates. There HAS to be an easier way!!

Hi Rick!
Saw you profiled on 20/20 and love what you’re doing for travelers!
Question: Can I use a frequent flyer mileage reward ticket and book a round-trip flight to Hawaii thru your site? Or must I book it ONLY with the issuing airline?
And is there a surefire method to make an airline go back and credit you with frequent flyer rewards they SAY they cannot find in their system?
Thank you for your answers!

Greetings Rick,
We (2)are traveling SFO-JFK, ( airline undetermined) one night stay over. Then to JFK-Accra, Ghana (Delta) in March 2008.
We are unsure of our return date, could be 6-months or 10-months.
Question: What is the cheapest way?
1) buy a round trip ticket. and take the hit for the booking change fee.
2) Or is there still such a thing as a open ticket, and how does it work? Is there a nothing way?
Farecompare.com is great..

I have found the fares listed on the FareCompare maps, particularly on international routes, to be more a fare fantasy. I try to find them on any day of the calendar and the map fares don’t exist. Many times, the map is off by hundreds of dollars (try NYC-DAM as an example). Why can’t you get this right?

Rick,
I am planning a trip to France in with 3 other people. (DSM>CDG 11 Apr; NCE>DSM 26 Apr; dates are not flexible). I’ve travelled to France at that time of year before, and it seems strange that there hasn’t been a big sale yet. I paid $650 for the reverse itinerary in Apr/May 2005. The prices to fly into Paris or Nice are almost $300 more than flying to London on the same dates. I’d like to be able to get tickets for $700-800. Did I miss something, or can I expect a sale in the first part of 2008? Will Open Skies have any impact on what I pay, or would I be taking a HUGE risk by waiting until March?
Thanks!

My wife and I are taking our granddaughter to Paris on the 27th of March, returning on April 5. Dates are flexible. My question is basically the same as Judy asked on Nov. 29. My wife and I had an idea to add spice to our travels. It stems from a conversation I had one time on an international flight when a man said he just walked up and bought the ticket for some low fare. We were thinking of showing up at the Seattle airport with just carryons and a passport.
1. If we just want to fly internationally (no connections), can we get cheap walk up fares for available seats?
2. If we can find cheap fares, is it possible to do the return process in the same way, given we are very flexible with our time?
Love the site and have a bundle of fare alerts. I tell all my friends about it.
Thanks.

Why are flights to Winnipeg YWG from Chicago and other US cities sooo expensive, about 2-3 times as much as a longer flight within the US? It seems crazy that any time there are deals or cheap flights, this route is excluded, although flight time is short (1h 40m from Chicago).

Hi Rick,
Are the first class airfares that show up on the MyTrip alerts Y-Up or Q-Up fares, or are they some other fare? I have read through the many articles on your website, but I don’t see where these low first class fares are accessible. You mention that most people who fly first class don’t pay the full rate, but the approximately $1600 fare to the New England area seems pretty full to me. How can I get access to the discounted first class fares that you emphasize on your website?
Any information you can provide would be appreciated.

Hi Rick,
Just wondering if you had heard that AirTran was no longer offering non-stop service from Akron to Las Vegas. I had booked a flight leaving June 11, 2008 and returning June 21, 2008 non-stop. I happen to be on their site and was checking my seat assignment when I noticed they had changed my flights. I had no notification from them. After a phone call I was told they had stopped the non-stop service, and since my flights was so far out they would send the notification as the time got closer. I am lucky I was checking seat assignment as the flight they put our party of 4 on had a 5-hour lay over in Atlanta. I was able to change the time but seating was very limited. If they should bring back the non-stop flight, should they be obligated to allow us to change our flight and put us back on our non-stop. Very frustrating.

Rick - Am planning a trip for 4 to Honolulu from 8/4 - 8/14 - dates are somewhat flexible. So far, have found flight from Chattanooga to HNL for about $875 each - one stop in Houston. Can’t seem to find the cheaper 1st class you discussed from any city near Chatt (ATL, Nashville, Knoxville) Is this typical due to the destination? Also, would you book this price now (non refundable) or wait a bit to watch the market? Don’t see the price of fuel going down any time soon…. Thanks for your input. Love the site - use it always.

Hi Rick:
I’m a bit baffled about FareCompare. I’ve listed a trip in “My Trips”, and have received several fare alerts, but I’m never able to find any such fares when I do another search. Not even close. I’ve read your Disclaimer, but I would think that after doing many repeated searches after several alerts I’d find an improved rate at least once. I’ve emailed the farecompare “feedback” twice about this, and never got a reply.

Hi Rick,
I have a question regarding passenger rights. My wife and 6 month old daughter are scheduled to fly British Airways to India (from Boston). We paid almost $600.00 for the ticket for my daughter.
We were under the impression that since the reservation included an infant they would give my wife a seat in the front with the bassinet attachment. We heard from a friend that it was not guaranteed that we get a bassinet if there is an infant traveling along with you. So my wife call BA to check about this and was told that this was true. When she tried to reserve a bassinet they said that the Heathrow to India segment which is about 11 hours has only 2 sets that has the bassinet and they both were already taken. When she asked if they could move her to an earlier or later flight that had seats with bassinets she was told that to do that she has to pay the change fee. They said that the only options we had was to either purchase a second ticket to get two seats or to pay the change fee to move to another flight.
We feel that since they knew at the time of reservation that an infant would be traveling they should either guarantee a bassinet or not sell the ticket or at the least let us know about this.
My wife is worried about the strain on the baby if she is unable to lie down for more than 11 hours. Is there any way to lodge a grievance and remedy this situation.
Thank you.
Sudhanand Dayalan.

I need to purchase airfare from DC to LA for the 4th of July weekend, as I am a bridesmaid in a wedding. The wedding schedule combined with my work schedule does not leave much flexibility in my travel days (I am pretty much locked in to heading out July 2 and returning July 6.) I was wondering, is there any chance that the price will drop down again? Or should I just purchase the already-somewhat-expensive airfare right now, before it goes up even more? Thanks.

Hi Rick, I have just found this site, and wish to ask for your comment on something I think is important. A friend and I were returning from New York to Atlanta November 2007; the flight was delayed for over 3 hours, making arrival in Atlanta about 1 a.m. We are both elderly, have COPD, and I was on a 4-legged cane. I told the attendant in NY we would need assistance when we got to Atlanta, but on arrival there was noone around. No airport employee, security, or any one to assist us. The airport was under renovation, the train was not running, leaving two elderly women to walk from the gate to the baggage through small areas, etc. After stopping many times, using inhalers and resting my leg (leaning against the makeshift wall), we were completely alone over half way. Getting to baggage, everyone had left except one lady waiting on her ride. We were absolutely horrified there was NO SECURITY, NO AIRPORT EMPLOYEE, NO ONE! She left, and we were outside baggage waiting on our ride and was approached by a homeless man wanting money, and thanked God our ride got there then. I called the airline, the airport manager, even Clark Howard(local TV station), as well as emailing the a/p mgr, and was more astounded no one cared. I was told there was security, we just didn’t see them. IF there was, why didn’t they come assist us? It was obvious we needed help, but I don’t believe there was anybody around; they were just making excuses. I still travel, but make sure I leave and return early. Seems to me like security should be as good at 1 am as 6 pm. Thank you.

I have family in North Dakota and we travel regularly between DTW and MOT (Minot). The price for tickets have sky rocketed to over $530 RT. Why is it I can fly my family to Frankfurt, Germany cheaper than Minot, North Dakota?
We live in a hub city (DTW) and NWA is the only game in town for MOT.
Comment by Robert Wheaton — January 29, 2008 @ 10:23 am
Can you tell me if I have any solid grounds for demanding some redress about this.
In searching for flights from NYC to Quito I found a flight that was listed as business class for a very good price. There were other options from the same site listed as economy that were less expensive. I purchased the tickets and received an e-mail confirmation listing the reservation as business. I called yesterday to book seats and was told by the agent that he could not access the business section of the plane (He agreed that the reservation was business) and that I would have to call the airline. I called the airline and was told that my reservation was economy. The agency’s response is “sorry” but since I did not specify business in my original search they do not have to honor the business designation on my reservation.
Is there somewhere I can go to at least complain, if not to get what I want?
Thanks

We travel to Rio de Janeiro almost yearly to visit family. Typically we go sometime around July/August for 3 or 4 weeks. Do you have any advice for timing ticket purchases for SFO - GIG? Does the 4 month rule have any bearing on such an international destination? Thanks!
Comment by Rolf — February 4, 2008 @ 8:03 pm
I was recently at SFO airport and on the security line, the TSA agent allowed a woman to go through with baby bottles. I heard the agent tell the woman that bottles of juice and milk are allowed, just not water. Not that I’m begrudging a child his or her nourishment, but what makes an open bottle of juice or milk allowed for a mother, but the rest of us can’t bring in a sealed bottle of water (and then have to pay an exhorbitant price for one in the airport)?

Rick–love your site! I am planning a trip to Sydney in July, perhaps for two people, from a tiny market (SGF). I am platinum on American, my traveling companion is not. Is it smarter to pay full fare from here (coach = around $2500), use miles to get to Hawaii and catch a business class only carrier (cannot think of the name), or some other approach? I have to travel somewhat exact dates, but have a little wiggle room. (Preference would be to pay for one, use miles as much as possible for second.) Thanks for your advice!

Rick,
We live in Boise Idaho and my husband works in Alaska on the North Slope on a 4 week on/2 week off schedule. What is the best way for us to purchase the cheapest tickets back and forth on a regular basis? He typically flies Alaska Air because of the company flight connections out of Anchorage. But it seems we are still paying around $700 per ticket. Help please! Thanks.

Rick,
Is there an easy way to find the cost of an unaccompanied minor flying? I have checked websites and it is very confusing. Would it be better for me to call the airlines directly? Thank you for any help.
Kathy

Rick,
I tried to access your “Insider Tip of the Week” about how to get hotel rooms cheap using your “stunningly simple secret,” but I was crushed to find that all of your alert emails I get have links that are “no longer in your database” after a while.
I save your wonderfully insightful emails as a reference for the pearls of wisdom that you offer in them, but now I see that I can’t access those pearls after a short period of time that the email arrives. I understand why the airfare deals would no longer be valid, but the tips and articles?
Anyway, I have family coming to California from Canada and Australia, and must plan a trip to Las Vegas in March. I’d really like to know what your tips are about getting good rates at a nice hotel on the strip. Thanks for all of your great advice!!

I love the idea of alerts for fares but it doesn’t allow for multiple destinations. Am I doing something wrong or is that simply not offered by fare compare? I want to fly from NY into Madrid, stay a few days, fly into Barcelona, stay a few days then fly home to NY. Most airlines won’t give you info unless they fly between Madrid and Barcelona. I’m hoping you add this feature. Most airline frequent flyer programs require you to fly in and out of the same airport. Why is that? Having to fly into Madrid, then to Barcelona and back to Madrid to fly home is a waste of time and money. Any suggestions other then deal with it? thanks

I knoticed when inquireing about fares to Canada from the USA the quotes are in Canadian dollars. Why not also provide the US dollar equivalent. thank you

Rick,
I love your site - I find it more useful in making travel decisions than anything else I have seen. Keep up the great work.
I am planning a trip with my wife in June and currently looking for the best airfare deal. We will be flying from one of the airports in the New York City area, and flying to Austin TX. We want to spend a week or more, but definitely need to be in town for an event on Saturday June 7. The trip would preferably extend through the following weekend, but we can be flexible.
According to FareCompare, the prices haven’t been changing much, and are currently only two-star rated, with the lowest available shown as $325 round trip. Southwest is advertising a sale until Thursday, and it looks like I could get two round-trip tickets from Long Island to Austin for just over $500 total. Should I snatch this up, or would you advise waiting another month or so?
Thanks for your time and help,
Zach

Hi Rick,
I have never travelled to Europe. I am planning a trip from Mumbai, India, to Varna, Bulgaria. Could you advise me on how to fly to the destination and include a different stopover of one day while travelling to and fro? Please advise me on the cheapest way to do so since I am a budget traveller. Also the fact that I might not be going to Europe again. Thanks.

Hey Rick,Family of ~10 adults/1 child going to Vegas for Thanksgiving (Tues-Sat). #1-any ideas on where to go for a great T-giving dinner? #2-websites to check for the “best”/most organized way to check out the Grand Canyon? #3- your thoughts/insights about staying in MGM owned apartment-style hotel? Family members are traveling from DC, Chicago, Atlanta.
Thanks, Cathy

I had been watching the flight prices for MSP - FLL roundtrip for 12/26/08 to 1/4/09 and they were high according to farecompare so I kept watching. Then yesterday the flight price more than doubled and there aren’t any coach seats available. Since this flight is more than 10 months away and only recently became available to book - How can all the coach seats suddenly be booked? Do travel agents buy all the seats speculating that they will sell them in a package deal? Is there anyway to find out who bought them all?

A great site, but no use to me in Australia.
I had completed a reservation when I came to enter my address and found Australia is not listed as one of the countries.
Most disappointing. It looks like you can only use this site if you live overseas in America or Europe.

I’ve been watching fares from STL to DEN for an April visit. Last month, there were several nonstop options on AA. Today there are none. I’m guessing those nonstop routes have been discontinued, but can’t find any information. Any suggestions on how to check that kind of news from airlines? (Or, more specifically, to find out about my specific need?) Did find, via Google but not with an AA site search, a relatively recent “news” story on AA about added nonstops, but nothing about what might have been taken away.

Is it “safe” to buy a roundtrip ticket and only use it one way? I’ve heard the airlines are “criacking down” on people who do this but have never heard of anyone being penalized.
